It was in 1969 that Gilbert de Turckheim and Jacques Renaud decided to open the Montagne des Singes. The concept is to present to visitors animals evolving in complete freedom in optimal living conditions, close to the wild state. It was Jacques Renaud's father, Jean-Paul Renaud, who, having lived in Algeria, suggested choosing the Barbary macaque. In the Chiffa gorges, south of Algiers near the inn “Au Ruisseau des Monkeys”, lived wild Magots who had become familiar with humans and became an attraction for passing tourists and local populations. The idea immediately appealed and the park opened its doors on August 9 with a population of 150 Magots from the Moroccan Middle Atlas who quickly took possession of the places made up of forests and meadows. An ambitious and somewhat risky bet, but the conditions for such an installation are favorable: monkeys live in the Middle Atlas in climatic conditions close to those we experience in Alsace. The site chosen for the establishment is superb. The Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg and the very young Volerie des Aigles (opened in 1968) attract many visitors to the massif. The adaptation of Magots in Alsace was a success and the park quickly became an essential outing. Come and experience an exceptional and privileged moment accompanied by an experienced park guide! Enjoy a private discovery of the park, participate in feeding the Barbary macaques and benefit from an introduction to observing this species and its behavior. Come escape for a surprising walk among more than 200 Barbary macaques who live freely in a 24ha forest! Enter, in total immersion, the enclosure of the reserve and become privileged witnesses of this fascinating animal society, evolving in conditions similar to those of wild life. The walk among the monkeys reveals, to the great delight of visitors, the different aspects of their social life. Here a male carries a baby, there, two females delouse each other in a friendly way, over there little monkeys play acrobats above the pool.. You will be seduced by the exceptional observation possibilities and amazed by the incredible proximity to the monkeys. Slip into the shoes of a monkey and take on the challenge of moving like primates! A new experience through a fun and educational journey which invites you to wander through the forest through the amenities while requiring you to reproduce certain behaviors of the monkeys. A succession of around fifteen devices on the ground or in height, secured by nets, takes you closer to nature to better understand the behavior of primates. You can climb like a Magot, jump like a Sifaka, balance like a Gibbon, rest like a Bonobo or even walk like a gorilla. A great opportunity to discover the diversity of primates, from Berthe's Microcebe, the smallest known primate in the world, to the emblematic Silverback Gorilla.
